Should You Clean Your Registry?

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Is it necessary to clean your registry? My answer is yes, I clean my computers registry at least once a week. Why so often? I like to know what programs have added what to my registry and incremental cleaning means that instead of fixing 100 errors at a time I only fix 5. This means there is much less chance of a serious error occurring.

Almost every single program installed on your machine will add entries to the Windows registry. If you are a user that gets by using a minimal install, not installing and uninstalling programs regularly, then possibly it is not necessary to clean your registry very often or even at all. However, if you are like me, I like to frequently try new programs so I am installing, testing and uninstalling programs on a weekly basis. Every single program adds registry entries. It is nice to think that uninstallers remove ALL references in the registry but in reality most uninstalls will leave a few entries in the registry. Carry on like this for a few months and then do a registry scan and you will be shocked, most likely there will be many, many inccorrect and invalid references in the registry hence the need to do regular cleans.

There can be issues with registry cleaning however. In my experience you get 3 kinds of registry cleaner :
1 - The AVERAGE cleaner. This program will find ’some’ of the problems in the registry and fix them. If you use a better cleaner afterwards you will still find errors.
2 - The AGGRESSIVE cleaner. This is the worst of the 3. It cleans the errors AND it cleans healthy references. An aggressive registry cleaner is dangerous and should NOT be used. They appear to be doing an amazing job, removing much more than other programs. However, in the long run this leads to errors - programs crashing, not starting and others. Avoid an aggressive registry cleaner at all costs. I have had an experience, after NOT backing-up my registry (NOT RECOMMENDED) and using an aggressive cleaner, that a full re-install had to be done.
3 - A GOOD cleaner. This should be installed on your machine. A GOOD cleaner finds and fixes most, if not all, registry errors and will help maintain your registry in peak condition.

Please remember (something I have forgotten before) to back-up your registry before doing any kind of cleaning. Most cleaners will offer this function. This is a very important point to remember before doing ANY registry clean.

Computer upgrades are expensive. If you have had your computer for a while there a few steps you can take to keep it going at its present running condition that does not cost a cent.

1. Clean the Windows Registry with a Registry Cleaner

The first thing you should always do is clean out your Windows Registry. Windows constantly references back to the Windows Registry during its normal operations but if the Registry is clogged up as a result of empty registry keys, file errors or corrupted keys then it can cause your computer to slow down dramatically.

It is also important to not attempt to clean out the Windows Registry yourself. Rather use a tried and tested product like RegCure which can be downloaded off the Internet for free. You will notice an immediate improvement in your computers performance.

The next step is the easiest step of all. Simply right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and select Empty. This will free much needed disk space on your computer.

3. Run a Spyware scan

Spyware is the number one threat on the Internet. It is essential to download anti-spyware software and run a scan of your computer to ensure that third parties do not get hold of your personal information and browser habits. A very good product to use is XoftSpySE.

4. Change your Internet browser

Slow loading pages could be the result of browser issues beyond your control. The simplest solution would be to change your Internet browser. Modzilla Firefox is by far the most user-friendly and requires the least updates.

5. Remove un-used programs and software

If there are any programs on your computer that you are not using such as a reader you downloaded a few months for an ebook you finished reading, uninstall it. You will free up valuable disk space.

6. Run disk clean up

his step is fully automated and can be found under properties in My Computer in the C Drive. This will automatically clean up your hard drive, free up some more disk space and dramatically improve PC performance.

7. Run a virus scan

Viruses can cause a deadly amount of damage to your computer. Sometimes you can download them without even knowing, such is the case with Trojan viruses which are disguised as other programs. Anti-virus software is free and should be run as often as possible.

Why you should never clean your Windows Registry yourself

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

The Windows Registry stores the settings for the hardware and processes necessary for your computer to function. Windows constantly references back to the Registry during operation.

Computer clutter, like empty registry keys, Spyware, uninstalled programs and file extensions can accumulate over time and clog up the Windows Registry, causing your computer to slow down and even cause system crashes and other errors. This is why it is essential to periodically conduct a sweep of your Windows Registry, especially after you have uninstalled a large number of programs.

Getting to the Windows Registry is simple enough because it is built into Microsoft.

Go to start - run - regedit

The tricky part is knowing which keys to look for as you have to search for them. This is also where most users run into difficulty as deleting the wrong file could cause irreparable damage to your computer. Driver, software and other system files are stored in the Registry. Deleting these could essentially cause fatal errors.

If you need to clean your Windows Registry, use a Registry Cleaner that was designed for that that exact purpose. It is safe and simple to use so the margin for error is practically non-existent. The process itself takes seconds to complete and you can literally see the difference in your computers performance.

There are many products on the market but one in particular, RegCure, is trusted by experts to always deliver top results.

When it comes to the safety of your computer, it is best to invest in software that you know will deliver results rather than attempting to fix the problem yourself. It might just cost you more in the long run.

Monday, May 26th, 2008

If you have had your computer for more than four years then chances are that it’s running at a slightly slower pace than it used to.

Before you jump ahead and upgrade to a newer model, there are certain steps you can take to speed up the one you already have. If done correctly, you can get a few more years out of your old faithful and save a lot of money in the process.

Before you begin, back up everything that needs to be backed up. It’s always better to be safer than sorry when it comes to safeguarding your information.

The first thing you need to do is clean out all the dust in your tower. This may seem trivial but dust can accumulate over the years and actually cause problems if not addressed. Besides, a good spring clean won’t cost a thing and will be beneficial for the health of your computer, especially if you choose to sell it.

Make sure that your computer is running and installing regular updates. Also check to ensure that your computer has sufficient disk space and memory. All of these factors can dramatically slow down your computer.

Every time you uninstall a program, it leaves a tiny fragment of itself behind. Empty registry keys and errors can build up over time and clog up your Windows Registry. Conducting a sweep of your Registry with a registry cleaner is a good way to speed up your PC and add a few more miles to the clock. A good product for the job is RegCure, which is quick and simple to use and delivers good results without the risk of damaging your computer.

It is important to conduct regular virus scans on your computer with trusted anti-virus software as well to install anti-spyware. This is vitally important as Spyware is one of the major causes of computer crashes worldwide. XoftSpySE is a reliable product that comes recommended by experts that will completely scan your computer for Adware, Spyware, Pop-Up’s, Trojans, and Malware.

Lastly, have a look at how fragmented your hard drive is. If your hard drive is too full, it can adversely affect the working of your PC. If you decide to defrag your computer, first empty your recycle bin. Next, start Windows in Safe Mode. This will simplify the process. The third step is to uninstall any programs you no longer want or use. Then cancel any programs that are scheduled to run. Delete any temporary files by running Disk Cleanup. Finally, run the Disk Fragmenter in System Tools. It’s best to do this overnight.

By now your computer should be running slighter faster. Keep repeating the above steps every few months and you will be able to enjoy the use of your computer for a while to come. If all else fails and you think its time to throw the old girl out, always remember to clean out the hard drive before you do. You don’t want to run the risk of identity theft.

Are Registry Cleaners Safe?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Windows Registry is the most important component of your computer. It’s where your entire computer’s system information is stored and the database that Windows references during operation. For a computer to operate at its best, experts recommend that you clean out your Registry regularly, especially after you have uninstalled a program. Empty registry keys and other clutter can clog up your registry, causing your computer to slow down dramatically.

Should one attempt to clean the registry oneself? The answer is a resounding no! The Windows Registry is vast and unless you really know what you’re doing and you have a lot of time on your hands, it is not recommended. To clean your Windows Registry you need a registry cleaner, which are available for download from many reputable sites on the Internet. A Registry Cleaner will take seconds to do what would have taken you hours.

But are registry cleaners safe? That depends on the products you choose. Some companies that offer free software hide Ad-ware in their products to cover their running costs. You won’t know this unless you have read your end-license agreement very carefully or unless its too late and you have already installed the cleaner.

You may also have the misfortune of downloading a registry cleaner from a less than reputable supplier that will clean up more than it was supposed to, like registry entries necessary for the working of your Registry.

Try a product that has been recommended by trusted technology websites. If the software offers a free trial, try that first to see if you are happy with the product before purchasing it. Usually products that have been around for a while will give you the best results. An example is RegCure, which also has 24-hour customer support to assist you if you run into difficulties.

Cleaning your Windows Registry needn’t be a hassle if you know where to look for the best products to help you.

What does a registry cleaner actually do?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

You have a problem - Your computer is too slow. You managed to pin-point the source to your Windows Registry and downloaded a Registry Cleaner to solve the problem.

But do you do actually know what a Registry cleaner does?

First, let us take a closer look at the Window Registry. The Registry is the central storehouse of information on your computer which Windows constantly references during operation. Defunct information and empty registry keys can accumulate in the Registry, especially after you have uninstalled quite a few items from your computer.

This mess causes your computer to slow down and perform poorly, which is where the Registry Cleaner comes in.

A registry cleaner repairs invalid entries and errors in your Windows Registry.

The software will run a scan on your registry and identify empty registry keys, defunct information and errors and isolate them. You will then have the option to delete these items and run a repair on your Registry.

A Registry Cleaner will effectively improve the performance of your computer and speed up the start-up time.

A Registry Cleaner is a good idea for anyone who is planning on uninstalling a large amount of programs from their computer.

RegCure is an excellent product to download which is easy-to-use and comes with free online support.

Getting to know your Windows Registry.

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

As your computer gets older, your Windows Registry gets cluttered by empty registry keys and errors. If you want to improve the performance of your PC it is essential that you run regular scans on the Registry with a registry cleaner to clean out the mess.

But how many of you are actually familiar with what the Windows Registry actually does?

I have put together a short glossary of terms relating to the Windows Registry to give you a better idea of what role this important component plays in your computer.

Windows Registry: The Windows registry is a directory which stores settings and options for the Windows operating system. Here, the information is stored that Windows continually references during operation.

Registry Cleaner: A registry cleaner is a type of program used in the Microsoft Windows operating system specifically designed to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry.

Registry Keys: Registry Keys are similar to folders and are used to store configuration information.

Empty Registry Keys: Empty registry keys are of no value in the registry and are usually the placeholders left behind after you have uninstalled applications and software from your computer.

Exe Errors: An .exe error is a type of file extension. The .exe error is one of the most common application errors found in the Windows Registry that can cause system crashes.

File extensions: File extensions are three-digit designations at end of a file name that tell the computer what format the file has been saved in.

Now that you know a little bit more about your Windows Registry the next step is to download a reliable registry cleaner.

I recommend  RegCure as it is both safe and easy-to-use.

The importance of being earnest … about registry cleaning.

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

The Windows Registry is one of the most important components of your computer. It is the directory of all the information that travels through your computer and it stores the settings and options for the entire Windows operating system. That’s pretty big stuff!

Over time the registry gets clogged up with debris and empty registry keys that get left behind. These errors are the major cause of slow booting-up times and system crashes.

If you want to keep the windows registry in top condition, you need to sweep out these registry errors regularly.

Because of the size of the registry database, manually cleaning up the junk and invalid entries yourself would be just plain impractical. Now you can understand how important a registry cleaner is for your PC.

You can understand why using a registry cleaner is important for the continued operation of your computer but did you know that a registry cleaner will aid you in combating the threat of Spyware as well?

Using anti-spyware software will effectively protect your computer from Spyware and will remove existing Spyware. The sneaky thing about Spyware and Adware is that just like other programs, they leave registry entries as well. A registry cleaner will delete these registry entries from the Windows Registry thus ending the reign of Spyware on your computer.

RegCure and Registry Mechanic are great registry cleaners to use that are 100% Spyware free.

XoftSpySE is highly recommended anti-spyware software that is 100% safe to use against Spyware.

PC behaving badly? Don’t overlook your Windows Registry

Friday, April 4th, 2008

We all notice that our computers begin to slow down after time. First its takes a little longer to start-up, then the browser begins to crash for no apparent reason. We accept this with good grace as the fate of time and start looking in the hardware catalogues for the latest upgrade.

The problem could stem from a cluttered Windows Registry.

The Windows Registry is the central database of your computer where the information necessary to configure your computer system is stored. Windows continuously refers back to this registry during operation to perform its daily tasks. The registry is basically responsible for your system start-up options, and keeps track of all software that’s installed.

As your computer gets older, your system registry gets cluttered with keys, file extensions and invalid information that has accumulated after years of installing and uninstalling programs and software.

This clutter can get corrupted resulting in Windows errors and a slow performing PC.

Using a registry cleaner will not only fix the above errors but will also improve the overall performance of your computer without having to buy expensive hardware.

There are many excellent products available to download for free from the Internet that are easy to use and will not infect your computer with Spyware or Malware.

I highly recommend RegCure and Registry Mechanic as free Registry cleaners.

Both products produce reliable results.
