Active-X

Imagine for a second that you’re a computer programmer.

Before 1996 programmers relied on OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), and COM (Component Object Model) for use in web applications. Microsoft later combined these technologies to create Active-X, which is similar to the Java applet, but has greater control and functionality.

Active -X allows content to be sent from the web to a Microsoft Window’s computer. Unfortunately, because Active-X controls have full access to the Windows operating system, this gives it more power than the Java applet, but it can also act as a gateway for Malware to enter your computer.

In theory Active-X controls are a great way for MS Windows computers to link MS Word Documents and Excel Spreadsheets with the Internet, but this is also very dangerous as viruses can flood through that opening and infect your operating system with the same ease.

Using Active-X controls is a security risk. Ensure that your computer is protected with reputable anti-Spyware software such as XoftSpySE which automatically updates its database regularly to ensure that your computer is always under guard.

What’s the big deal about Active X?

Active X Controls are Microsoft’s answer to the Java Applet. They’re an Internet Explorer plug-In that allow a user to interact with and run compatible applications over the Internet. Unfortunately, ActiveX Controls don’t offer the same protection as Java Controls and have major security flaws.

The danger of ActiveX is that the software has great potential to be hacked and can actually act as a gateway for Malware to get into your system.

How ActiveX works is that the software runs little bits of code that can install small compatible programs into your system, which allows for interactive content, such as spreadsheets and calculators. This code is the reason why it so easy for Malware to enter your system.

Being aware of the danger is the first step to letting the creators of malicious software invade your computer. Don’t follow links to unknown or unsecured websites that use ActiveX controls.

It is also vitally important that you keep your anti-spyware software updated so that your computer is protected from the latest threats. XoftSpySE is an excellent anti-spyware tool that regularly updates its definition database to include even threats coming at you from vulnerable Active X controls.

If you are already using Active X controls always remember to regularly conduct a scan of your Windows Registry with registry cleaning tools such as RegCure to ensure that damaged Active X controls don’t clutter your system.
